A VISION FOR THE FUTURE Bedford's New Theatre District
With the removal of the town hall
building and the opening up of the river we feel there
is an opportunity to create something special in the
centre of town based around the Civic Theatre, the
Corn Exchange and the Harpur Street.
Imagine what could be possible:-
- Pavement cafes
- A safe place to walk at night
- PEOPLE COMING TO Bedford in the evening for
culture and not to get drunk and create trouble
- More high profile productions and more variety at the
3 venues
- A change of image for Bedford
To
achieve this however we need YOUR help.
We must stop Dave Hodgson, the liberal democrat mayor,
from closing the Civic immediately. This will give us
time to work out what is possible, ensure the costs do
not escalate and put together a viable plan.
Dave Hodgson, the Liberal Democrat Mayor
and Leader of Bedford Council, has announced his intention
to close the Civic theatre and turn it into council offices. We strongly oppose this decision The loss of the theatre, with no plans to
replace it, will take away yet another amenity from our
town.
The council states it will cost £783,163 to turn it into
council offices. We believe the final figure will be
higher, but for a fraction of that figure this grade
2 listed Victorian building can become a great asset. Save Our Civic
Ultimately
we would like to see a theatre district here as in
other towns, but to do this we
need your help. If you want to save YOUR theatre then:-
here
is how to do it.
